Challenge
A leading utility in The Netherlands, Warmtestad, is required by law to cut natural gas use and replace it with renewables to run its local district heat network. The end-client required to enter in a long term Heat Purchase Agreement, without any upfront CAPEX and any O&M risk and cost. Solar thermal is required to exceed 50% coverage of the district heating yearly load with most of heating demand in winter with poor irradiance. Given land scarcity, the huge solar thermal occupying 12 hectares should to deployed onto the premises of a soil depot.
Solution
TVP partnered with a local renewable infrastructure developer, Novar, and a landscaping specialist, K3, for project development and project financing. The construction required custom support structures and landscape regeneration. Solar thermal to deliver 12 months per year consistent heat above 80ᣞC, integrating both a 6,000 m3 stratified thermal storage tank and an underground ATES to extend energy release throughout the day and reach the required solar coverage.
